Population Health / Informatics

Clinical laboratory testing represents 2.5% of healthcare spending yet is responsible for 70% of medical decision-making. Traditional transactional models that strictly view lab as either a cost or profit center risk commoditizing laboratory medicine rather than capitalizing on its higher valuation that can drive better outcomes.

Laboratory professionals are unique in that our specialty requires us to understand the basis of all human disease, we understand the impact of treatment and intervention on the entire human condition rather than just the disease being treated, we understand the impact of the data that we provide on medical decision-making, we have sight lines into every sector of healthcare, we live and breathe quality and safety, we practice system management as a core expertise, our innovations are scalable and replicable, our innovations are inexpensive but can have great impact, we have data streams on the entire population, and we see diagnostic data first.

These unique attributes position the laboratory to lead the transition to alternative payment models that demand value over volume, pay for episodes of care rather than units of service performed, and move away from fee for service toward bundled payments. The laboratory can be leveraged to not only support provider use of cost effective and rational choices for diagnostic testing but to:

  • Identify care gaps and their root causes
  • Link testing to outcomes for both individual patients and populations
  • Risk stratify patients for targeted care management programs
  • Optimize revenue recovery in provision of episodes of care
  • Optimize total coordination of care
  • Improve data flow and management
  • Support telemedecine workflows

With masters level training in public health and board-certification in Clinical Informatics, Excelsior Pathology is a leader in advancing population health objectives of the communities it serves.
